The Game Design Based on Mythology book is compiled as an effort to present a comprehensive guide on how mythology—particularly Javanese mythology—can serve as both a creative foundation and a conceptual framework in game design development. The book systematically explores the relationship between mythology, cultural visual representation, and the creative process involved in game asset production through a structured academic approach, supported by visual examples and relevant case studies. Broadly, the discussion progresses from fundamental theories of mythology, visual concepts in visual communication design, and the application of Javanese cultural aesthetics, to practical stages of game asset production as represented through project-based studies.
A central focus of the book is the use of Ardhana as a primary case study. Ardhana is a 2D isometric game prototype developed by Septiawan Dwi Rahmat, a student of Visual Communication Design at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), as an undergraduate final project. This project was selected as the main reference due to its successful integration of Javanese mythological elements with contemporary visual design approaches, demonstrating how cultural values can be effectively adapted into modern interactive media. Through this case study, readers are able to directly observe the connection between theory and practice, particularly in the process of designing visual assets such as characters, environments, and user interfaces.
